- The Court of Appeal of Alberta confirmed that the Honourable Ritu Khullar died after an illness while surrounded by family, with media reports saying she passed on Thursday.
- Khullar served as Chief Justice of Alberta and as chief justice of the courts of appeal for Nunavut and the Northwest Territories, a role she assumed in 2022.
- She was appointed to the Court of King’s Bench of Alberta in 2017 after more than two decades in private practice focused on public law areas such as labour and employment, privacy, administrative, human rights and constitutional law.
- Federal and provincial officials, including the federal Department of Justice and Alberta’s premier and justice minister, issued statements praising her integrity, commitment to access to justice and defence of judicial independence.
- In keeping with provincial protocol, flags at the Alberta legislature, the McDougall Centre and courthouses across the province will be flown at half-mast as condolences and any ceremonial arrangements are finalized.
