Alberta Approves Four More MLA Recall Petitions, Including Two Ministers and First NDP Target

The citizen-initiated process created under UCP legislation now moves to signature collection under strict rules.

Overview

  • Chief Electoral Officer Gordon McClure approved petitions for Amanda Chapman (Calgary-Beddington), Peter Singh (Calgary-East), Tanya Fir (Calgary-Peigan) and Health Minister Adriana LaGrange (Red Deer-North).
  • The additions raise the number of approved recall petition applications to at least 18, enabling organizers to register canvassers and begin gathering signatures.
  • Petitioners have 90 days to collect signatures equal to 60% of votes cast in the last election in each riding, with a March 5, 2026 submission date cited for these four petitions.
  • Chapman is the first NDP MLA to face a recall drive in the current wave, which has otherwise focused largely on UCP members.
  • A petition targeting Premier Danielle Smith has been reported but was not on Elections Alberta’s list of approved petitions at the time of reporting.
