Overview
- On June 17, 40-year-old Saul Morales-Garcia lunged at U.S. Attorney John A. Sarcone III outside the Hilton Hotel in Albany, brandishing a knife and making slitting-the-throat gestures before sheriff’s deputies intervened.
- Morales-Garcia was arraigned on attempted second-degree murder, criminal possession of a weapon in the third degree and menacing in the second degree and is being held without bail.
- FBI and Homeland Security Investigations agents have joined the probe and the suspect may face additional federal charges for unlawful reentry.
- At Sarcone’s request, his office stepped aside from prosecuting the suspect’s felony illegal reentry count, and the case was reassigned to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York.
- Morales-Garcia, who was deported before reentering in 2021, has a criminal history in multiple states, including DUI convictions and outstanding warrants.
