Witnesses reported a fatal rappel error freeing a stuck haul bag near the top of Sea of Dreams.

Overview

  • Miller’s death on Oct. 1 was confirmed by his family after he fell near the final pitches of Sea of Dreams on El Capitan.
  • Photographer Tom Evans, who was on scene, said Miller descended to clear a snagged haul bag and went off the end of his rope.
  • Parts of the climb and the fall were seen on a TikTok livestream monitored from El Cap Meadow, and the video was provided to rangers.
  • The National Park Service says it is investigating; rangers responded quickly despite the first day of a federal government shutdown.
  • The 23-year-old Alaskan had recently drawn acclaim for major solos, including Denali’s Slovak Direct, and was known in Yosemite as the “Orange Tent Guy.”
