Alagoas Judge Orders Preventive Arrest in Indigenous Hit-and-Run as Driver Remains Fugitive

The ruling followed sustained pressure from the Wassu Cocal community after the November 8 death.

Overview

  • Justice in Alagoas granted preventive detention on December 4 for the 35-year-old suspected of killing Charles José do Nascimento and injuring another man in Joaquim Gomes, with charges including qualified homicide with alleged dolo eventual and attempted homicide.
  • The suspect has not been found and is considered a fugitive, as Civil Police ask for anonymous tips via Disque Denúncia 181 and also seek the arrest of his partner who was in the car.
  • A day earlier, members of the Wassu Cocal community blocked both directions of BR-101 to demand the suspect’s detention after police concluded the inquiry and sent the arrest request to the local court.
  • In São Paulo, Civil Police launched Operation Falso Mercúrio against a network suspected of laundering money for the PCC, securing court blocks totaling R$98 million and seizing dozens of properties, vehicles and boats while the probe continues.
  • Separately, the Federal Highway Police in Paraná seized 3,063 kg of marijuana from a truck on BR-277 after a traffic stop for a burned-out headlight, arresting the driver on drug trafficking charges.
