Overview
- The Instituto do Meio Ambiente de Alagoas (IMA), using samples taken July 20–21, listed 10 coastal trechos as impróprios for bathing with seven of those located in Maceió and the rest in Maragogi and Barra de São Miguel.
- The Instituto do Meio Ambiente e Recursos Hídricos da Bahia (Inema) reported on July 24 that about 28 of 147 monitored trechos in Bahia are impróprios this weekend, with many affected sites in Salvador while several major tourist beaches remain próprio.
- Agencies classify balneability using E. coli counts under Conama-aligned rules: a single recent sample above 2,000 E. coli per 100 ml can mark a site as impróprio and a site is próprio when at least 80% of five weeks of samples stay at or below 800 E. coli per 100 ml.
- Both IMA and Inema advise avoiding bathing near river mouths, sewage or drainage outflows and within 24 hours after heavy rain, they warn against ingesting seawater and urge extra care for children.
- Regular weekly monitoring means conditions can change quickly, so localized closures may affect local tourism and public health and officials say rainfall-driven runoff is the main short-term trigger to watch for.
