Alabama Storms Knock Out Power to 50,000 as 70 MPH Winds Hit

Utility crews are restoring service with severe-thunderstorm warnings still active for parts of east Alabama.

Overview

  • Alabama Power reported 50,213 customers without electricity at 6:25 a.m., up from more than 44,000 statewide earlier in the morning.
  • Jefferson County accounted for about 32,956 of the outages, with Blount, Etowah, St. Clair, Tuscaloosa, and Walker each topping 2,000.
  • The National Weather Service warned residents to expect damage from straight-line winds that could gust up to 70 mph.
  • Active severe-thunderstorm warnings persisted for sections of Calhoun, Cleburne, and Cherokee counties as the line moved east.
  • Fallen trees and downed power lines disrupted travel, including one impassable road in northern Jefferson County, while heavy rain slowed cleanup on a First Warning Impact Day.
