The incident occurred early Tuesday morning as Atkinson was setting off on a vacation with her two daughters and their friends.
Police reports indicate that the back hatch of Atkinson's vehicle came open, causing a piece of luggage to fall out and scatter clothing across the highway.
Atkinson was struck by another vehicle while attempting to collect the scattered items. Neither alcohol, drugs, nor speeding are believed to have been factors in the accident.
