Alabama Man Arrested Over Threats to O.C. Abbey With Body Armor and High-Capacity Magazines

Authorities ask for public tips during an active motive investigation.

Overview

  • Joshua Michael Richardson, 38, was identified by the Orange County Sheriff's Department and arrested at the Santa Monica Pier after a priest reported in-person threats.
  • Investigators say Richardson first sent threatening emails to St. Michael's Abbey, then appeared at the Silverado Canyon church on Aug. 28 and made additional threats.
  • Deputies searching his vehicle recovered two sets of body armor, radios, high-capacity magazines, brass knuckles, at least two knives and rope, with no confirmation on any firearms.
  • Richardson was booked into the Orange County Jail on suspicion of making criminal threats, and deputies said he had no prior criminal history.
  • The Diocese of Orange praised the quick report to 911, and OCSD urged anyone with information to contact investigators or submit anonymous tips to Orange County Crime Stoppers.
