Alabama Executes Geoffrey Todd West by Nitrogen Gas After Clemency Denied

Witness reports of gasping during the nitrogen procedure renewed questions about the method.

Overview

  • The Alabama Department of Corrections said West was pronounced dead at 6:22 p.m. at William C. Holman Correctional Facility after nitrogen hypoxia was administered.
  • Journalists in the chamber reported West appeared to gasp, rock his head and slightly foam at the mouth in the first minutes before becoming still.
  • Corrections Commissioner John Hamm said the movements were largely involuntary and that the procedure went as expected under protocol.
  • Gov. Kay Ivey declined to grant clemency despite a public plea from victim Margaret Parrish Berry’s son, and prison officials denied a requested meeting between the two citing security rules.
  • In a statement relayed by his attorney, West apologized to the family and noted the son’s forgiveness; Alabama pioneered nitrogen executions in 2024, and the method has now been used seven times nationwide.
