Alabama Cancels West Virginia Series After SEC Adds Ninth Game, Adds East Carolina for 2026

East Carolina will visit Tuscaloosa on Sept. 5, 2026 under a $1.5 million guarantee, according to the game contract.

Overview

  • Alabama and West Virginia mutually ended their 2026–27 home-and-home following the SEC’s move to a nine-game conference schedule beginning in 2026.
  • Alabama finalized the ECU replacement with a contract dated Aug. 21, 2025, and multiple outlets report the cancellation involved no buyout.
  • All three of Alabama’s 2026 nonconference games are at home: East Carolina (Sept. 5), South Florida (Sept. 12) and Florida State (Sept. 19).
  • Athletic director Greg Byrne said Alabama may adjust future series but will keep scheduling at least one Power 4 opponent and intends to maintain seven home games.
  • West Virginia reworked its 2026 slate, including Coastal Carolina, to align with a College Football Playoff-style approach to nonconference scheduling.
