AKC Publishes Thanksgiving Dog Food Safety List as Vets Flag Holiday Risks

Owners should seek veterinary help or call a poison-control hotline at the first sign of exposure.

Overview

  • Safe options include plain, unseasoned cooked turkey without skin or bones along with small portions of plain sweet potatoes, green beans, peas, apples, pumpkin, zucchini and raspberries.
  • Toxic or hazardous items include turkey skin and brine, ham, gravy, cooked or uncooked bones, rich or fatty dishes, stuffing, casseroles, alliums such as onions and garlic, grapes and raisins, avocados, macadamia nuts, chocolate, alcohol and raw bread dough.
  • Pumpkin pie is not safe because nutmeg can cause neurological problems in pets, and mashed or creamed sides often contain butter, dairy or seasonings that are unsafe.
  • Even tiny amounts can make dogs seriously ill, and foods listed as safe must be served plain and not mixed with butter, spices or any unsafe ingredients.
  • If a pet may have eaten something dangerous, contact a veterinarian, an emergency clinic, the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center at 888-426-4435 or the Pet Poison Helpline at 855-764-7761.
