Akali Dal Leader Majithia Arrested in Alleged ₹540 Crore Drug Money Laundering

Chief Minister Mann has vowed to extend the crackdown following raids that led to Majithia’s seven-day remand.

Overview

  • Bikram Singh Majithia was taken into custody on June 25 after the Punjab Vigilance Bureau raided 25 locations, including his Amritsar residence, over an alleged ₹540 crore drug money laundering scheme.
  • A Special Investigation Team and vigilance officials found that over ₹540 crore was funneled through unaccounted cash deposits, suspected foreign entities and companies such as Saraya Industries.
  • Investigators seized more than 30 mobile phones, several laptops, tablets, desktop computers and property documents during the search of Majithia’s premises.
  • A Mohali court on June 26 sent Majithia to seven days of police remand as authorities gather further evidence for the disproportionate assets case.
  • Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann said the arrest exposed an unholy alliance among traditional parties and promised additional arrests; the Shiromani Akali Dal has condemned the action as political vendetta.
