AJK Assembly to Vote Today on No-Confidence Against PM Anwarul Haq

Recent defections, with PML-N backing, have tilted the numbers in PPP’s favor.

Overview

  • The special session is scheduled for 3pm and will be chaired by Speaker Chaudhry Latif Akbar, with the motion formally on the agenda.
  • PPP has nominated Faisal Mumtaz Rathore for prime minister and claims support in the high 30s, well above the 27 votes needed.
  • PML-N has backed the no-confidence move but says it will sit on the opposition benches rather than join the government.
  • PPP’s strength followed a wave of realignments, including 10 PTI-elected lawmakers joining the party on October 26 and public withdrawals of support by ministers Diwan Chughtai and Taqadas Gillani.
  • Security has been tightened with restricted access to the assembly complex, and Anwarul Haq has signaled he will face the vote; PTI, the Muslim Conference and the J&K Peoples Party are reported as neutral.
