Ajay Singhal Takes Charge as Haryana DGP, Sadanand Date Named Maharashtra Police Chief

Both selections follow UPSC panels under Supreme Court tenure rules to insulate state police leadership.

Overview

  • Ajay Singhal, a 1992-batch IPS officer, formally assumed charge as Haryana DGP on January 1 in Panchkula with a minimum two-year term.
  • Upon taking office, he announced a forthcoming night-time assistance program called ‘Madadgar Police’ and pledged tougher action on cybercrime, narcotics and extortion.
  • Singhal said Operations Trackdown and Hotspot would continue, the Special Task Force will be reorganised, and efforts will target proclaimed offenders and land-grab networks.
  • Haryana made the appointment from a UPSC panel that also included Shatrujeet Singh Kapur and Alok Mittal, followed by senior IPS postings and transfers.
  • In Maharashtra, the Home Department appointed former NIA chief Sadanand V. Date as DGP with a fixed two-year tenure, with charge expected in January.
