Aizawl Prepares for Rail Debut as Modi Likely to Inaugurate Bairabi–Sairang Line on Sept. 13

The 51.38 km route, cleared by the rail safety regulator in June, is set to open passenger service at up to 100 km/h with three express trains planned after the launch.

Overview

  • Officials report citywide preparations for a Prime Minister-led ceremony at Sairang station with a public address at the Assam Rifles ground, while final confirmation from the PMO is still awaited.
  • The new corridor delivers the first direct rail link to Mizoram’s capital, fully integrating Aizawl with India’s national railway network for both passengers and freight.
  • Commissioner of Railway Safety inspections and speed trials on June 6 and June 10 authorised commissioning of the HortokiSairang section, completing the Bairabi–Sairang alignment.
  • Constructed for about Rs 8,000 crore, the project spans 51.38 km with 48 tunnels, 55 major bridges and 87 minor bridges, including Bridge No. 196 rising roughly 114 metres.
  • Operations are expected to cut AizawlSilchar travel to about three hours and reduce AizawlGuwahati journeys to under 12 hours, with inaugural express services slated to link Delhi (Anand Vihar), Kolkata and Guwahati.
