AIUDF Seeks Police Safeguards for Miya Muslims Facing Vigilante Threats and Evictions
AIUDF has urged Assam’s top police to enforce protection orders for Miya Muslims after reports of vigilante home raids during forest eviction drives.
Overview
- On August 4, AIUDF legislators led by Rafiqul Islam met IGP Akhilesh Singh to submit a memorandum demanding urgent action against recent identity-based assaults on Miya community members in Sivasagar, Jorhat and Golaghat.
- In a letter to DGP H. Singh, the party warned that self-styled vigilante groups have been forcibly entering houses, defaming residents as foreigners and pressuring landlords to evict Bengali-speaking Muslim tenants.
- A video highlighted in the AIUDF representation shows a Jatiya Sangrami Sena leader threatening a Miya person with 24-hour eviction from Upper Assam.
- Since June 16, state eviction operations have cleared forest land and displaced more than 5,300 Bengali-speaking Muslim families, who allege selective enforcement and lack of due process.
- AIUDF has demanded strict investigations and clear directives to district police to curb unlawful harassment and secure the rights of affected families.
