AIUDF Hands Assam Memorandum Demanding UCC Repeal and Halt to Pushbacks

The party’s formal demands threaten a political and legal fight that could bring the UCC, citizenship checks and eviction policy before higher courts.

Overview

  • An AIUDF delegation led by Badruddin Ajmal met Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and submitted a memorandum on Wednesday pressing three demands: repeal of the Assam Uniform Civil Code, an immediate stop to alleged wrongful pushbacks to Bangladesh, and suspension of eviction drives until rehabilitation is arranged.
  • AIUDF says officials have detained and declared genuine Indian citizens as foreigners and that night-time pushbacks are leaving people stranded in the India–Bangladesh no-man’s land, citing cases such as the reported return of Sakina Khatun to India after being pushed across the border.
  • The party argues the state UCC passed in May interferes with Muslim personal law on marriage, divorce, inheritance and succession and invokes constitutional protections including Articles 25, 26, 29 and 30 in calling for the law’s review or repeal.
  • AIUDF demanded immediate rehabilitation measures for families removed in recent eviction drives, warning that children have lost access to schooling and displaced households lack shelter, and urging land allotment or alternative housing before further removals.
  • The Assam government acknowledged receipt of the memorandum and said it will examine the points while AIUDF has signaled readiness to pursue administrative remedies and litigation up to the Supreme Court; the dispute sits against a longer history of NRC checks, Foreigners’ Tribunals and Bangladesh’s reported reluctance to accept some returnees.
