AIU Bans Ruth Chepngetich for Three Years After Positive HCTZ Test

Investigators will examine data from her phone for potential additional breaches after closing the diuretic case.

Overview

  • A urine sample on March 14, 2025 detected hydrochlorothiazide at about 3,800 ng/ml, far above the 20 ng/ml threshold.
  • Chepngetich admitted an anti-doping violation and accepted the sanction, cutting a proposed four-year ban to three.
  • Results achieved before March 14 remain in place for now, including her October 2024 Chicago marathon world record of 2:09:56.
  • She had been provisionally suspended since July prior to Thursday’s announcement by the Athletics Integrity Unit.
  • The AIU says hydrochlorothiazide is banned for its masking potential; it also recorded her late claim of taking a housekeeper’s medication, which it deemed not credible.
