Airstrike on Two Myanmar High Schools Kills At Least 19, Mostly Students

UNICEF condemned the attack, which local reports attribute to a junta warplane.

Overview

  • The overnight strike hit Pyinnyar Pan Khinn and A Myin Thit private high schools in Thayet Thapin village in Kyauktaw township, an area under Arakan Army control in Rakhine state.
  • The Arakan Army said a jet dropped two bombs on the schools and that most of those killed were 17- to 18-year-old students.
  • Local outlet Myanmar Now reported that two 500-pound bombs were used as students slept.
  • Relief workers reported 21 to 22 people injured, several critically, and damage to at least six nearby houses.
  • The military has not acknowledged any operation in the area, and communications blackouts are limiting independent confirmation of details.
