Airbus Chooses Scaleway to Host Critical AI and Defence Work

The deal is intended to keep sensitive data, intellectual property and certified aviation systems under European legal control.

Overview

  • Airbus announced the multi‑year agreement with Iliad‑owned Scaleway on July 16 to host sensitive aerospace, industrial and defence applications and to run AI models developed with Mistral.
  • The company plans to migrate about 70 critical applications to Scaleway by the end of 2028 and could move as many as 900 applications over the next five to six years.
  • Airbus said Scaleway will host workloads across aircraft design, engineering, industrial production and corporate operations, including systems used for certified aviation and military applications.
  • The vendor was chosen after more than 150 technical and legal checks, with Airbus citing protections against a so‑called 'kill switch' and against the reach of foreign extraterritorial laws as decisive factors.
  • The move reinforces a broader European push for cloud and AI sovereignty and may reduce reliance on US hyperscalers, with potential downstream effects on where R&D, data and defence contracts are run and governed.
