Airbound Raises $8.65 Million, Launches Medical Drone Pilot With Narayana Health

The seed funding supports scaling a blended-wing tail-sitter designed to cut last-mile costs through greater energy efficiency.

Overview

  • Physical Intelligence co-founder Lachy Groom led the round, with participation from Lightspeed, Humba Ventures, and senior leaders from Tesla, SpaceX/Anduril, and Ather Energy.
  • Airbound began a three-month program with Narayana Health targeting about 10 daily deliveries of blood samples, test kits, and essential supplies in Bengaluru.
  • The company’s carbon-fiber TRT aircraft uses a blended-wing-body tail-sitter design with two propellers to lift off vertically and cruise like a plane, a setup it says improves efficiency over quadcopters.
  • Airbound states current manufacturing is roughly one drone per day and targets scaling to more than 100 per day, with a second-version prototype planned by mid-2026 and production slated for early 2027.
  • The startup cites goals such as one-cent deliveries and up to 20-fold lower energy costs versus conventional methods, while regulatory clearances are in discussion and some reported founding details differ across outlets.
