Airborne Tire From BMW Kills Driver on 60 Freeway Near Beaumont

CHP asks anyone with information to contact its San Gorgonio Pass office.

Overview

  • The crash was reported shortly after 11 a.m. Monday on westbound SR-60 just west of Jack Rabbit Trail in the San Gorgonio Pass area.
  • Investigators say the left rear tire of an eastbound 2011 BMW 328i detached, flew over the center divider, and struck a westbound 2017 Toyota Sienna’s windshield and roof.
  • The Toyota’s 68-year-old Los Angeles driver died at the scene, a 54-year-old female passenger sustained minor injuries and was hospitalized, and the BMW driver was unhurt.
  • KESQ identified the BMW driver as 54-year-old Philip Neil McKeehan of Riverside, information not included in CHP’s public release.
  • Lanes on the 60 Freeway were temporarily closed and reopened by early afternoon as the investigation continued.
