Airbnb Limits Host Checkout Chores and Requires Upfront House Rules

The company says the change will give guests clearer expectations, with enforcement through listing flags, reduced visibility, appeals, narrow local exceptions.

Overview

  • Airbnb announced the policy update on Oct. 20–21, 2026 and will apply to reservations booked on or after Nov. 20, 2026, banning hosts from requiring time-consuming tasks like washing and putting away dishes, stripping beds, starting laundry, or taking trash off-site.
  • All house rules must be disclosed in a designated section of the listing at the time of booking so guests see requests before they pay, and hosts may not add new mandatory requirements later via messages, signs, or verbal instructions.
  • Hosts may still ask guests to do light, reasonable tasks such as leaving used dishes in the sink, gathering used towels, separating trash into indoor bins, or turning off advertised amenities when leaving.
  • Airbnb will flag listings that violate the rules, may display notices to guests, and says persistent breaches could reduce a listing’s search visibility or trigger other actions under its terms while hosts can appeal enforcement decisions.
  • The change keeps cleaning fees in place but bars charging guests extra solely for failing to perform forbidden chores, and it follows years of transparency moves and long-running guest complaints that prompted the company to standardize seven rule categories and tighten disclosure.
