Air-Traffic Controllers Set Sept. 18 Strike as Transport Unions Rally

The transport minister has vowed not to yield to the controllers’ demands.

Overview

  • The majority controllers’ union SNCTA announced a nationwide walkout for Thursday, September 18, with a strike notice covering from the start of duty that morning to the end of the following night’s service.
  • SNCTA is seeking full 2024 inflation catch-up in pay and major changes to the profession’s governance, citing mistrust, punitive practices and degrading management methods.
  • France’s national inter-union coordination has designated September 18 as a day of strikes and demonstrations, and the four main RATP unions have called for a “massive” walkout.
  • In aviation, CGT Air France plans action on September 10 and 18, Sud Aérien is calling for September 10, and the pilots’ union SNPL has not yet taken a position.
  • Transport Minister Philippe Tabarot said he will not give in to the strike call and criticized the timing given a pending confidence vote for François Bayrou, after recent controller walkouts caused thousands of flight cancellations.
