Air India Reduces Wide-Body Flights as Safety Inspections Intensify After Ahmedabad Crash

Air India will reduce international wide-body services by 15% through mid-July to accommodate in-depth safety inspections

Overview

  • The Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau, supported by US and UK authorities, expects to release preliminary findings in about four weeks
  • Forensic teams have identified more than 210 crash victims through DNA testing and are continuing to match remains
  • Air India has cancelled 83 wide-body services and will cut international long-haul flights by 15% through mid-July to maintain operational stability and keep reserve aircraft ready
  • Directorate General of Civil Aviation’s one-time safety review has cleared 26 of Air India’s 33 Boeing 787s and been extended to inspect its Boeing 777 fleet
  • The crashed Boeing 787-8 had a clean maintenance record, with a June 2023 major check and engine overhauls in March and April 2025, and was flown by pilots with over 11,500 and 3,400 flight hours respectively
