Air India Opens Probe as Canada Flags Violations in Vancouver Pilot Incident

Transport Canada set a January 26 deadline for the airline’s response after RCMP breath tests found the captain unfit for duty.

Overview

  • Transport Canada notified Air India that a pilot assigned to Flight AI186 on December 23 at Vancouver International Airport was removed just before departure over suspected impairment.
  • RCMP conducted two breathalyser tests that, according to the regulator’s letter, confirmed the pilot was under the influence and unfit for duty.
  • The regulator cited potential breaches of Canadian Aviation Regulations 602.02 and 602.03 and a violation of condition (g) of Air India’s Foreign Air Operator Certificate, with enforcement action indicated as likely.
  • Air India has constituted an internal inquiry committee, removed the pilot from flying duties, and informed India’s Directorate General of Civil Aviation.
  • Airport officials said the Vancouver–Delhi flight departed later after a delay, and Transport Canada requested a full response and corrective measures by January 26.
