Overview

  • Flight AI-171, a 12-year-old Boeing 787-8 en route from Ahmedabad to London, struck a medical college hostel minutes after takeoff and killed at least 270 people including 29 on the ground.
  • India’s Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau located and retrieved the digital flight data recorder from the hostel rooftop on June 13.
  • Teams from India’s AAIB, the U.S. NTSB and FAA, Boeing and General Electric have joined the probe to examine engine data, control settings and crew actions during takeoff.
  • Search crews have recovered at least 25 more bodies in the wreckage, and DNA testing is under way to identify victims whose remains were severely burned.
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited the site, met the lone survivor Viswashkumar Ramesh and ordered enhanced safety inspections of Air India’s Boeing 787 fleet powered by GEnx engines.
