Air India Dreamliner Crash in Ahmedabad Kills Cabin Crew Member Irfan Shaikh

Investigators have begun DNA testing for victim identification with families of the deceased awaiting the release of remains

Overview

  • On June 12, Air India Flight AI171, a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner bound for London, crashed after takeoff from Ahmedabad, killing 241 of the 242 people on board.
  • Only one passenger miraculously survived the crash.
  • Among the dead was 22-year-old cabin crew member Irfan Shaikh, who had completed training with Vistara and joined Air India following their merger.
  • Shaikh’s family provided a DNA sample from his brother to assist in identifying his remains and has been told results could take 48 to 72 hours before his body is released.
  • His uncle said that Irfan’s last call to his mother before boarding had become a poignant reminder for the grieving family in Pimpri-Chinchwad.
