Air India Begins Dreamliner Retrofit Phase in $400M Fleet Revamp

Air India has dispatched two Boeing 787-8s to Victorville for cabin overhauls with system upgrades designed to rebuild reliability.

Overview

  • The first Boeing 787-8 (VT-ANT) arrived at Victorville in July and the second is slated to depart in October, with both expected to return to service by December.
  • All 26 legacy 787-8s will receive new three-class cabins and return by mid-2027, a timeline extended by supply chain constraints.
  • The Airbus A320neo refresh has upgraded 16 of 27 aircraft so far under a programme set to finish by September 2025 thanks to a third line at GMR’s Hyderabad MRO.
  • Work on 13 Boeing 777-300ERs will begin in early 2027 with completion targeted for October 2028 despite parts delays.
  • This overhaul is part of Tata Group’s post-privatisation transformation and follows safety and reliability upgrades accelerated by the June 2025 Dreamliner crash.
