Air Force Rescinds 135 Security Forces Promotions After Test Scoring Error

An outdated scoring key misgraded 27 Specialty Knowledge Test items and a full re-score will shift 135 promotion slots to different airmen while preserving the original quota.

Overview

  • An enlisted promotions team member discovered the scoring error on Tuesday when an outdated answer key was found to have misgraded 27 questions on the security forces Specialty Knowledge Test.
  • The Air Force conducted a full re-score of 2,285 security forces eligibles that removed 135 previously selected staff sergeants and identified 135 alternate selects without changing the total quota of 586 promotions.
  • The newly selected airmen will be notified in an out-of-cycle supplemental promotion release planned for the week of July 13 and the administrative adjustment will not change the promotion timing.
  • Officials said the mistake was human error, not the result of artificial intelligence, and that the problem was isolated to the security forces career field, which has about 43,000 enlisted Defenders.
  • Leadership directed personal engagement with affected members, set up follow-up channels, and ordered reviews and quality-assurance changes to prevent similar grading failures that can affect careers and retirement prospects.
