Air Force Recasts 492nd as Power Projection Wing at Davis-Monthan in Revised Plan

Service analysis favored keeping MC-130s in place, with special tactics moves shelved over costly facilities.

Overview

  • The Air Force cleared the 492nd headquarters, the 492nd Special Operations Theater Air Operations Squadron, the 319th Special Operations Squadron, and a new Air Combat Command intelligence squadron to begin relocating to Arizona.
  • The updated design adds a second OA-1K squadron from Hurlburt Field and the 20th Special Operations Squadron with CV-22s plus its aircraft maintenance unit from Cannon AFB, pending environmental review.
  • AFSOC said retaining MC-130 squadrons at current locations proved more effective based on recent analysis.
  • Plans to move special tactics units were dropped due to the high cost of constructing the specialized facilities they require at Davis-Monthan.
  • Environmental analysis for the remaining moves begins this fall, with AFSOC targeting full operational capability in fiscal 2028 as A-10 retirements at the base continue.
