Air Force Overhauls Fitness Test, Mandates 2‑Mile Run and Biannual Assessments

The overhaul is designed to raise readiness and standardize expectations across the force.

Overview

  • Testing pauses Jan. 1, 2026, transitions to a diagnostic phase from March 1 to Aug. 31, and resumes scored exams under the new standards on Sept. 1.
  • The updated Physical Fitness Assessment uses a 100‑point scale weighted 50 for cardiorespiratory fitness, 20 for waist‑to‑height ratio, 15 for muscle strength, and 15 for core endurance.
  • Every Airman must complete a timed two‑mile run at least once every 365 days, with the 20‑meter shuttle run (HAMR) remaining an approved alternate for other test cycles.
  • A scored waist‑to‑height body composition measure returns to the PFA, which may be taken up to five days before the workout portion; Guard and Reserve members may complete it during drill.
  • All Airmen will test every six months regardless of prior scores, as part of a broader Culture of Fitness that includes the Warfighter’s Fitness Playbook and allows commanders to direct mass testing cycles.
