Air Force Global Strike Commander Gen. Thomas Bussiere to Retire

The move follows the withdrawal of his vice chief nomination, with Lt. Gen. Stephen Davis confirmed to take the command at a scheduled Oct. 17 ceremony.

Overview

  • Gen. Thomas Bussiere announced Sept. 30 that he will request retirement for personal and family reasons in a statement posted to Air Force Global Strike Command’s Facebook page.
  • A change-of-command for AFGSC is slated for Oct. 17, when Bussiere is expected to depart, and the Senate has already confirmed Lt. Gen. Stephen Davis as his successor.
  • Bussiere’s July nomination to become Vice Chief of Staff was withdrawn in September after weeks without movement, reversing his expected elevation.
  • The Senate has formally received President Trump’s nomination of retired Gen. Kenneth Wilsbach to be Air Force Chief of Staff, narrowing Bussiere’s potential paths to a four-star role as Gen. David Allvin stays on until a successor is confirmed.
  • Bussiere has led AFGSC since December 2022, overseeing the Air Force’s nuclear deterrent and modernization efforts including the B-21 Raider program and the LGM-35A Sentinel missile effort.
