Air Force, FBI Probe Tampering at Nevada Crash Site Near Area 51

A follow-up survey after a Sept. 23 incident found items placed at the cleared site, including an inert training bomb body plus an unknown aircraft panel.

Overview

  • An aircraft assigned to the 432nd Wing at Creech AFB was involved in a Sept. 23 incident with no injuries or fatalities, according to the Air Force.
  • Air Force OSI and the FBI opened a joint investigation after the Oct. 3 discovery of post-incident tampering at the mishap location.
  • The FAA issued a national-security Temporary Flight Restriction on Sept. 23 covering a five-nautical-mile radius up to 15,000 feet MSL, which expired Oct. 1.
  • The site was secured and guarded until recovery and cleanup concluded on Sept. 27, after which investigators later reported the newly placed items.
  • Officials have not identified the aircraft type or precise location; analysis of TFR coordinates places the site roughly 12 miles east of the Area 51 boundary, with local researcher Joerg Arnu posting video of the cleared area.
