Air Force Drops Mandatory 2-Mile Run as Space Force Moves to Twice-Yearly Testing

Driven by a Pentagon push for standardized readiness testing, the overhaul begins in July after a short transition.

Overview

  • Airmen may now choose either a 2-mile run or the High Aerobic Multi-Shuttle Run for both semiannual fitness tests.
  • The updated Air Force assessment offers push-up and core event options and uses a waist-to-height ratio for body composition.
  • Fitness testing is paused until the end of February, a diagnostic window runs March 1 to June 30, and official testing starts in July.
  • Performance briefs will begin reflecting Physical Fitness Assessment scores on a phased schedule, starting with colonels in February and expanding to lieutenant colonels, majors, and chief master sergeants in May.
  • All guardians must test twice a year, including those in the wearable-based study, and must complete a 2-mile run in at least one test, with body composition not scored.
