Air Force Commits to 500 Autonomous Fighters by 2032

The plan signals a shift to massed, lower‑cost uncrewed fleets that will require big budget increases and new ways to operate and sustain them.

Overview

  • Secretary of the Air Force Troy Meink announced Monday that the service intends to field at least 500 Collaborative Combat Aircraft and 500 Massed Modular Aircraft by 2032 and that early FQ-42 and FQ-44 production is already under way.
  • The Air Force gave the FQ-42 the name Vengeance and kept the FQ-44 name Fury, and officials said initial increments are rolling off assembly lines and entering testing and operational experiments.
  • Service leaders have set aggressive unit‑cost goals of roughly $20 million per CCA and $10 million per MMA to make mass buys feasible, and the FY27 budget request includes large procurement and R&D asks to start scaling production.
  • The MMA push was sped up after high MQ-9 Reaper losses in operations against Iran reduced existing ISR and strike capacity, creating urgency for cheaper, attritable platforms to replace that capability.
  • Key obstacles remain funding approvals, industrial output and open‑architecture support systems, plus unresolved operational concepts for launch, recovery, command and control, and rules for semi‑autonomous employment.
