Air Canada Shifts Aeroplan to Revenue-Based Earning and Launches Status Qualifying Credits

Beginning January 1, 2026, the program will reward spending with a unified points metric alongside status credits, with bonus credits for premium cardholders introduced in 2027.

Effective for travel on or after January 1, 2026, Aeroplan members will earn points on eligible Air Canada flights based on dollars spent rather than the distance they travel. (CNW Group/Air Canada)

Overview

  • Aeroplan points will convert from distance-based awards to one point per dollar spent on eligible Air Canada base fares and carrier surcharges.
  • A new Status Qualifying Credits (SQC) system replaces qualifying dollars, miles and segments, letting members earn up to four SQCs per dollar on Air Canada flights and up to 25,000 SQCs each from Aeroplan credit-card spend and partner activity annually.
  • Elite status tiers will receive multipliers of two to six points per dollar spent, based on members’ status level.
  • All core and milestone perks—including priority check-in, free checked bags and Status Passes—will continue, and premium cardholders will gain a 10% SQC bonus beginning in 2027.
  • Aeroplan expects the overhaul to be revenue-neutral and plans frequent bonus promotions to offset reduced point earnings on lower-priced long-haul fares.
