Air Canada Flight Attendants Reject Deal as Wage Dispute Moves to Mediation

Both sides will mediate the wage issue under a pledge that flights continue.

Overview

  • CUPE reported that 99.1% of 10,517 flight attendants voted against the tentative wage offer, with turnout at 94.6%.
  • Air Canada and CUPE agreed to mediation on wages and, if needed, binding arbitration by the Canada Industrial Relations Board with a final, non-appealable decision.
  • The parties committed to no strike or lockout during the process, so scheduled flights will continue operating.
  • Ground pay provisions from the August tentative agreement remain in place, including 50% pay for one hour before departure rising to 70% by year four, while only wage rates are unresolved.
  • CUPE says the proposed raises would still leave many below the federal minimum once unpaid duties are counted, and more than 50,000 people have signed petitions backing higher pay.
