Air Ambulances Diverted From OHSU After Online Call for Laser Strikes at Federal Helicopters

OHSU reported no patients were delayed.

Overview

  • An anonymously posted flyer on Rose City Counter-Info urged a 9 p.m. "laser tag" action targeting federal aircraft over South Portland and offered tips to avoid identification.
  • Multiple air ambulance providers declined to use OHSU’s rooftop helipad Saturday night, rerouting to nearby airports and sending patients by ground for an added 45–60 minutes.
  • OHSU warned the precautionary detours could affect unstable trauma cases as well as heart attacks and strokes and asked staff to factor in the extra transit time.
  • Portland police monitored the ICE facility and said they received no reports of lasers impacting aircraft that night, and DHS reiterated that pointing lasers at aircraft is a federal crime.
  • OHSU said there were no impacted patients and indicated vendors were expected to resume landings the following night.
