AIMPLB Postpones Oct. 3 Bharat Bandh Against Waqf Law

Leaders said the bandh was deferred to avoid clashing with festivals in several states.

Overview

  • The postponement followed an emergency meeting led by AIMPLB president Maulana Khalid Saifullah Rahmani, with leaders saying new dates will be announced soon.
  • The board said its Save Waqf campaign continues, with previously scheduled protests still on, including an October 11 demonstration at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi.
  • The scrapped October 3 shutdown had asked businesses and offices to close from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., exempting hospitals, pharmacies and essential medical services.
  • Muslim cleric Shahabuddin Razvi urged people to ignore the bandh call and keep businesses open, asserting the issue had been politicised.
  • The Centre maintains the Waqf (Amendment) Act, branded UMEED, aims to improve transparency and governance of waqf properties.
