AIIMS Study Finds Fivefold Higher Obesity Rates Among Delhi Private School Adolescents

Overview

  • The study assessed blood pressure, waist circumference, fasting blood glucose, cholesterol and triglycerides in 3,888 Delhi adolescents aged 6 to 19 across 1,985 public and 1,903 private school students.
  • Underweight prevalence was 4.95% overall, with public school students nearly five times more likely to be underweight than their private school counterparts.
  • General obesity affected 13.41% of participants and central obesity 9.15%, with both measures significantly higher among private school adolescents.
  • Private school students faced 2.37 times higher impaired fasting plasma glucose risk and 3.51 times higher metabolic syndrome prevalence compared to public school peers.
  • Hypertension prevalence stood at 7.37% among urban adolescents, showing no significant variation by school type or gender.
