AIIMS Rajkot Opens Rs 39 Crore Advanced Radiotherapy Unit

The centrally funded centre is meant to ease travel and cost barriers for Saurashtra and Kutch patients by providing high-precision cancer treatment with financial cover for eligible beneficiaries.

Overview

  • Union Health Minister J.P. Nadda virtually inaugurated the facility on Monday, November 2, 2026, with state and central officials joining the ceremony.
  • The centre is fitted with a high-energy linear accelerator, a wide-bore CT simulator and an HDR brachytherapy unit that enable IMRT, VMAT, image-guided and stereotactic radiotherapy.
  • Officials say eligible patients under Ayushman Bharat–Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana will receive treatment at no cost and other patients will get subsidised care.
  • The unit is expected to serve patients from Rajkot, Saurashtra, Kutch and neighbouring districts and is projected to handle several hundred patients a year, reducing long-distance referrals to cities like Ahmedabad and Mumbai.
  • AIIMS Rajkot will also use the facility for medical education, specialist training, research and strengthened screening and referral links, though routine operational metrics and patient volumes have not yet been published.
