AI Tools Increasing Threat of Cyber Attacks, Warns UK's Cybersecurity Agency

Advanced AI tools are making scams more convincing and could potentially generate undetectable malware, raising concerns about heightened cyber threats.

  • Artificial intelligence (AI) tools are making email scams more convincing than ever, spy chiefs at GCHQ have warned.
  • The adoption of AI tools by criminal hackers would “almost certainly increase the volume and heighten the impact of cyber attacks”.
  • AI-generated malware that avoids detection could already be available to nation-states, according to the UK’s cybersecurity agency.
  • AI is set to make the discovery of vulnerable devices easier, the NCSC predicted, reducing the window defenders have in which to ensure vulnerable devices are patched with the latest security fixes before attackers detect and compromise them.
  • The NCSC said generative AI tools already helped make approaches to potential victims more convincing by creating fake “lure documents” that did not contain the translation, spelling or grammatical errors that tended to give away phishing attacks.
