London-based technologist Matt Webb has launched a Kickstarter campaign for Poem/1, an AI-powered clock that tells the time through unique poems generated every minute using OpenAI’s ChatGPT.
The clock, priced at $126 on Kickstarter, has been described as a whimsical and artistic project, despite its tendency to inaccurately display the time or invent words to fit its rhymes.
Webb's company, Acts Not Facts, runs a central server that generates the poems and distributes them to all Poem/1 clocks, avoiding costly individual API queries.
Webb plans to publish the full documentation and API when the Poem/1 ships, allowing tech-savvy users to customize their own AI text.
Despite the clock's inaccuracies, the Kickstarter campaign has gained significant traction, with Webb stating that more than 1,500 people have signed up for the Poem/1 waitlist.
