Ahr Valley Rail Line Reopens Fully Four Years After Devastating Floods

Regular regional services begin December 14 after a four-year reconstruction of the flood‑ravaged route.

Overview

  • Deutsche Bahn formally reopened the final section on December 12 with a ceremony attended by Transport Minister Patrick Schnieder, state premier Alexander Schweitzer and DB chief Evelyn Palla, including a special run from Dernau to Altenahr.
  • RB30 will run hourly between Ahrbrück, Remagen and Bonn once regular operations start on December 14.
  • RB32 will operate hourly between Altenahr and Remagen, extending every two hours via Koblenz to Boppard, with a planned extension to Ahrbrück after a Heimersheim flood‑protection wall is finished in summer 2026.
  • The rebuild restored 18 kilometers of track, 22 bridges, five tunnels and ten stations, added electrification and modern signaling, and involved about €590 million in investment.
  • The hardest‑hit WalporzheimAhrbrück segment was reconstructed to near new‑build standards with extensive bridge, embankment and station renewal to improve resilience against future high water.
