AHA Study Links Long-Term Melatonin Use to Higher Heart Failure and Mortality Risk

Researchers caution the results show association, not causation, with over-the-counter use often absent from medical records.

Overview

  • An analysis of five years of TriNetX electronic records for 130,828 adults with insomnia identified long-term use as at least 12 months documented in charts.
  • New heart failure occurred in 4.6% of documented long-term users versus 2.7% of matched nonusers over five years.
  • Hospitalization for heart failure was 19.0% for documented users compared with 6.6% for nonusers, and all-cause death was 7.8% versus 4.3%.
  • The study was presented at the American Heart Association Scientific Sessions 2025 in New Orleans and has not yet been peer-reviewed or published.
  • Experts advise people relying on melatonin for more than a year to consult a clinician, noting U.S. over-the-counter use may be misclassified and that persistent sleep problems warrant evaluation.
