Early tallies show Paloma Aguirre ahead in the low-turnout race that will break the board’s 2-2 deadlock

Overview

  • With 18.5% of ballots counted from the July 1 election, Registrar data show Aguirre leading McCann 53.38% to 46.62%.
  • District 1 voters have returned roughly 17–18% of ballots in the special election to fill the seat vacated by Nora Vargas.
  • The winner will serve the remainder of the term through January 2029 and influence county policy on reserves, environmental challenges and immigration enforcement.
  • Additional vote dumps are expected by Thursday evening and the election must be certified by July 31.
  • John McCann, Republican mayor of Chula Vista, and Paloma Aguirre, Democratic mayor of Imperial Beach, advanced from the April primary with 43.58% and 31.62% of the vote, respectively.
