Agra Idol-Immersion Drowning: Five Dead as Search Widens for Missing Youths

Officials say hidden 20–25-foot drop-offs, possibly from illegal sand mining, trapped swimmers after they left the marked immersion point upstream.

Overview

  • Police said five bodies have been recovered and the search is on for seven others after 13 people were swept away during Thursday’s Durga idol immersion in Khairagarh, Agra.
  • One survivor, identified as Vishnu, was pulled from the water by villagers and is hospitalized in stable condition.
  • A large multi-agency operation is underway with two NDRF units, the SDRF, PAC and Etawah divers, and the Army’s 50 Para Brigade and 411 Para Field Company.
  • Authorities said the group entered the Utangan River about 300 metres upstream of the designated site despite an artificial pond prepared for immersion.
  • Local residents staged protests over what they called a slow rescue response, while officials also cited swollen monsoon waters and unmarked deep pits at the site.
