Aging Fleet Issues Stall Eglinton Crosstown LRT’s September Launch

Metrolinx says that decade-old cars are exposing maintenance flaws in stress tests before a mandatory 30-day revenue service demonstration.

Overview

  • Metrolinx interim CEO Michael Lindsay said stress testing has revealed significant vehicle availability and reliability issues in the fleet of ten-year-old LRT cars.
  • TTC crews have been conducting early-morning to late-night trials on rolling stock and testing non-rolling stock systems such as escalators, elevators and HVAC.
  • Teams are working to resolve maintenance profile defects in the aging units within the next few weeks before launching a mandatory 30-day revenue service demonstration.
  • If this demonstration runs smoothly, Metrolinx expects to declare the project substantially complete toward the end of September.
  • Since 2011, the $13-billion Crosstown has missed its original 2020 launch target and endured legal disputes, construction complications, pandemic slowdowns and technical setbacks.
